Breed 77 – Insects

Wake up, the latest single to be released from this album really lets it down. It shouldn’t be the opening track on this album, to agree with Chris who reviewed it as a single, it’s more comedic metal than straight up metal. A bit of a let down as I really wanted to find a different point of view with it. Moving on though and track two ‘The battle of hatin’ is much more like what we would expect from Breed 77 the vocals are much stronger, much more distinctive, allows it to stand out from other bands in a similar mould. The intro to this song brings you into it straight away, the harmonics when other vocalists get involved bring further life into this song giving it that little bit more than Wake Up.

Track 3, Revolution on my mind is just another in the vein of Wake Up, skippable, at best. Track 4, Insects again turns it around, making this album almost impossible to follow, it’s like they alternate between two lead singers, one who does his best to showcase a distinctive unique vocal talent, and the other, who really seems to be trying to be angrier than he really is for the sake of the music. I have to say, I like the first guy much more. Track 4 with the first guy, showcases brilliant tight music, showing the band have a good appreciation for each others talent.

It’s really hard to decide if I like track 5 ‘Who I am’, for a start it’s just too long, it starts well, but about 3 minutes in, it should end, it just ends up feeling like a time filler, good start though. Track 6 has the same problem, I guess you can expect this from an album with no songs under 4 minutes. The problem is, I’m halfway through or just abouts, and I’m seriously wanting to turn it off, I’ve had my fill of Breed for the evening, this isn’t a good sign for an album. Okay, so I’m not the biggest metal fan, but done right and I can listen as long as the next guy.

Track 7 ‘One more time’ is better, because it’s shorter, it sounds exactly like most of the second singers songs! Track 8 ‘In the temple of Ram: rise of the bugs’ didn’t inspire me when reading the title, turned it around a lot though, instrumental right the way through and shows an awful lot more of the bands capabilities than any other track on this album, the only thing missing from this track is some nice harmonics from the first guy. Forever the next track has harmony, great pace and lyrics (for the record, Kirk’s mum reckons this track reminds her of the JAM. errr, okay?) Does suffer from too long syndrome, but we’ll forgive it because it’s catchy and will be one of only a number i’ll be leaving on my iPod.

Guerra del sol the penultimate track on this album (And the longest) is actually quite good, not as mellow as track 8, but has the missing harmonic lyrics, and instantly elevates it above others. I’m liking the solo barrage around 3:20 lasts about 40 seconds and is well worth the listen. The final couple of minutes of this song a brilliantly simple and help with raising the rating of this entire album. Final track ‘Zombie’, an interesting cover of the Cranberries original, continues the vein of form the end of this album seems to be running in. Lovely acoustic guitar, much gentler vocals and an all round good effect to bring a close to this album.

In conclusion, this album is mediocre, at times, and at other times really stands out above the crowd. There are tracks that go on too long, and tracks that feel like they could be missed out altogether, but all in all, I think I’ll be keeping at least half of it after all. A bit more consistency would be all this album needs to take it up a whole lot more. Worth a listen if you’re looking for something a bit different than your average metal album, and would make the average fan of Breed ecstatic.

Rating: ★★★☆☆
