Killaflaw – 'Set Me On Fire'

Following impeccable recent live showings at The Secret Garden Party and a triumphant homecoming gig at Liverpool’s Mathew Street festival, Dance Rock titans Killaflaw are readying themselves to drop their second EP of ’09 on October 12th. The Dynamic duo have also signed up to receive the remix treatment from highly lauded dance mega stars the Utah Saints. With this much momentum conjured now is the perfect time to unleash the next phase in Killaflaw’s mission for complete domination.
‘Set Me On Fire’ is comprised of four eccentrically energised cuts. Starting out with the original version of the title track we find Liverpool’s fastest rising stars in predictably manic mindset. ‘Set Me On Fire’ is essentially a blues number belted out to the backdrop of a seedy Acid Jazz club all nighter. Vocalist Benn Helm’s desperate croons find solace in the cold comfort of Andy Paton’s techno-punk thrash. The pulsating melodies burrow away before fizzing seamlessly into Paton’s driving instrumental. Teetering on just the right side of insanity ‘Set Me On fire’ is eventually plucked from the edge and nourished back to health by Helm’s soulful bark questioning ‘Lord, if I win would you lift me up higher’?
The EP rumbles on with two other versions of ‘Set Me On Fire’, the Radio Edit and the frenetic ‘Tragic Flaw’ mix which oozes dirty breakbeats and comes complete with a devilishly dramatic build up, eventually erupting into a bass-led beat down.
Rounding out the musical masterclass is the atmospheric ‘Japanese Tourist’. Announcing it’s arrival with staccato loops ‘JT’ is a moody piece of electro funk which amply showcases Andy’s Paton’s knack for crafting a canvas that is anything but relegated to background status.
Killaflaw will be spreading their unique brand of mayhem across the UK this October before headlining spots at Liverpool Music Week and In The City 2009, an American showcase created by Filter Magazine. My advice would be to catch them while you can, they play host to an incidary live show and rather enviably have an ever growing legion of faithful followers. In the meantime, pick up this EP and check out their MySpace for more details on their forthcoming exciting endeavours.
