Dan Black – Un

This album has been the most challenging to review of all those i’ve so far done for crowdsurfer. Mostly because i’ve been quite lucky in the past, in that although the stuff I’ve reviewed before has been of varying quality it’s always been within my broad taste of music, unforunatly this one falls way outside what I would choose to listen to most of the time. The truth is, I’m sure this album will fit in fine with it’s target audience (Those who like to follow the chart shows on local radio and such) but for me it just grates.
It starts with first song Symphonies (also to be first single 06/07/09) in truth, not the worst song on the album, however it gets annoying very quickly, a problem shared by the entire album. Mostly it annoys because the music and lyrics feel like they’ve been thrown together in the hope of hitting number one as soon as possible. Unfortunately this is a problem shared by the entire album, there are a few songs that could probably be played in clubs (Pump my pumps being one of them) otherwise not an awful lot of scope in this album.
One song which stands out amid the gloom that was becoming my mood when listening to this was Track 9 ‘Cigarette Pack’, this song show a glimpse of brilliance when it comes to writing a song, when the artist jokes that he could change the world and he’ll write how on the back of a cigarette pack, I did like this song, but probably it’s fair to say it’s only one I did like. Entertaining if not the best song you’ll ever hear.
For most of the visitors to this site, I’d recommend you stay away from this, it won’t improve your record collection, perhaps for those of you who bought the La Roux album and like it, maybe give this a go too.
