Wall Street Riots – Playground Politics EP

Wall Street Riots sound very familiar, chances are you will swear you’ve heard any of the four tracks that comprise debut EP ‘Playground Politics’ somewhere on your travels. Opener ‘Dr King’ is a spritely introduction. Charging outta the pen with a riff reminiscent of Lostprophet’s hit ‘Burn Burn’. The jigsaw rhythms give way to a vocal that, well, sounds rather like LP mainman Ian Watkins, throw in a few Fall Out Boy lyricisms and you’ve pretty much summed up the cut which is primarily used to sum up the intentions of this London based quartet.

Don’t worry though, Wall Street Riots don’t just sound like Lostprophets, no sir, they sound like a whole host of bands. ‘Lords of Dogtown’ could feasibly be a Head Automatica b-side and ‘Karma Kids’ exudes the very same unhinged swagger that first attracted you to Billy Talent.

‘Playground Politics’ is not a total bust. In fact it holds the interest and underlines a fair musicianship that could flourish if used in a progressive way. Every cut bursts with optimism and these are obviously a bunch of happy lads stoked at the chance to play music for a living. Unfortunately that’s exactly how this EP works, on a level of four young men scrapeing out of their teens, paying homage to their favourite bands before they have to go get real jobs.

Wall Street Riots have produced a ‘nice’ EP. It’s the kind of CD you’d play a couple times before it mysteriously vanishes under that crack behind your headboard for five years.

If you like to support your fellow countrymen and ‘Buy British’ check this out, otherwise just wait for Panic At The Disco’s outtakes and demos album.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆!
