The New 1920 – Self Titled EP

Produced by three members of the Lostprophets, this 4-track EP is less than inspiring. It will obviously draw comparions with their successful Welsh brethren, but unfortunately sounds more like LP as they sound now, as opposed to the exciting, punchy LP of days gone by.

First track ‘Come Around’ is a typical slice of pop-rock, with an emo tinge, that doesn’t really do anything exciting at any point in it’s almost 4 minute long run time. It’s generic, insipid and generates no emotion of any kind. ‘Head For The Exit’ fares better, but only just. There’s a bit more to it, and more energy exuding from it. It’s still fairly generic, but shows signs of promise that hopefully will amount to something in the future.

Easily the best song on here, ‘Amber Gambler’ stands out not just because of it’s chanted opening/chorus, but also because it’s where the band sound at their best. It’s catchy, and most likely to garner The New 1920 the most attention.

The fourth and final track here is ‘Keep On’, an acoustic number, which actually does a good job of showcasing Colin Francies’s vocals (beside a few ill-advised ‘Ohh-Ohh-Ohh’s) and the quality of the lyrics (beside a few ill-advised ‘Ohh-Ohh-Ohh’s), that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Rating: ★★½☆☆
