Eels – My Timing Is Off

Yes! New Eels!

I’m kind of a fan.

E has been creating wonderfully original, quirky and passionate music for bloody years now, and only ever flirted with the mainstream. New single ‘My Timing Is Off’ is unlikely to change that, but will surely leave his legions of fans incredibly happy with the man. A slow, melodic low-fi track with a simple but solid drumbeat, it ambles along at it’s own pace, admiring the scenery and taking every last gruff syllable that falls from E’s mouth. Like most of Eels back catalogue, it’s the perfect accompaniment to absolutely anything you might find yourself doing.

My only real qualm is that it seems to end too soon, and at only 3 minutes long, it could have done with another verse to fully round it off. Still, I’m not complaining…I’m just kicking myself for not already having the album. Which, incidentally, is called Hombre Lobo, and is out now.

The ‘B’Side’ – Fresh Blood, takes a different route; it’s a dirty, bassy track with a slow, plodding backbone. But it’s still great.

Rating: ★★★★★ Unashamedly biased journalism for the win.
