Goldie Lookin Chain – Liverpool Barfly – 16/03/09

Unfortunately (well, maybe fortunately) we managed to miss the first half of Riuven. He was rapping about how “Goths Are Not Boss” which, cleverly, was the name of his song.
I’m told it’s supposed to be completely ironic, and he’s a semi-posh kid going out there to make people laugh. Well he’s succeeded if that is the case, because it did make me laugh.
It seems to be an elaborate joke, but good luck to him if he can make it work!
The stage was empty for a while before Goldie Lookin’ Chain (GLC) came out, but everyone started packing in early, in anticipation. The lights went dead, and a very authentic sounding robot voice sounds over the speakers, kicking them into ‘Half Man, Half Machine’. Immediately people were singing along and jumping around. The mood didn’t die down at all all night.
They mixed it up part way though, with ‘Hit Song’, which they claim is their attempt at a throw back to the early 90s Rave scene, complete with strobe lights and the handing out of glow sticks.
There was a lot of banter with the crowd, especially regarding their charity raffle, in which one lucky guy won the OFFICIAL, 1990 Question of Sport board game.
They have a new single out (today, actually), they told everyone the chorus and had them sing along. The B-Side to their new single, as they said, probably won’t get much air time, what with it having the line “I f**ked a corned beef Kelly Osbourne”. As with all of their songs, it was hilarious. The crowd enjoyed it and they seemed to enjoy playing it.
They didn’t let up for the entire time, and ended on a clear favourite, ‘Your Mother’s Got a Penis’.
I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who could find ways to be offended by their songs, but GLC are absolutely brilliant. If you get a chance to go see them live, please, do it! If not (or aswell) pick up one of their albums. You’re doing yourself an injustice if you don’t hear them play.
We’ll have an interview up with them soon, so keep your eye out for that, it should be entertaining!
Amazing gig, I had a ball and everyone else seemed to aswell.
