by Q Magazine, ‘Only by the Night’ has been the Kings of Leon’s catapult into the mainstream audience. It’s been a long time coming, and it should have happened back in 2004 with their sophomore album ‘Aha Shake Heartbreak’ but 4 years on and their fourth instalment has broken through.

The album has quite a safe and samey tone about it, dispelling the former upbeat and choppy tunes of old. Singles ‘Sex on Fire’ and ‘Use Somebody’ are strong and there are also a couple of good more mellow tracks (notably ‘Manhattan’ & closing track ‘Cold Desert’), which we started to hear coming in on ‘Because of the Times.’ What this album is crying out for a ‘Molly’s Chambers’ or even a ‘Bucket’ like song but it doesn’t deliver.

The Kings of Leon bandwagon has been taken over by the listeners who still listen to the Top 40 on a Sunday and I only hope it doesn’t mean they’re going to drift off into Now that’s What I Call Music obscurity.

Rating: ★★★☆☆
