Hey! Even though youre not too far into it, hows the tour going?
Good. Really good. We have been looking forward to coming out with Fightstar. The last time we played with them was 2 years ago now.
Obviously you are playing with “Fightstar” but what of the other band on the bill “We Are The Ocean”?
They are very very good. Lovley guys as well and they are very good at what they do. They really get the crowd going. They are a band that are ascending quickly so keep an eye out for them.
After this tour your playing some festivals. Do you prefer larger gigs likefestivals or smaller shows?
They are so different and each has a totally different vibe. I feel like a bit of a hippy playing at a festval, everyone is really relaxed and it’s a really good day out. We enjoy both but we prefer bigger venue gigs because we love big stages and it fits our sound I think. You get more time to set up and soundcheck when you tour which is nice.
Tell us a bit about your new album?
We did so much pre production for this album so when we went into the studio we knew exactly what we were doing. It was a lot more concise than it was when we went in to record the first album. It was a process rather than hit and miss try this, try that. It was just a case of getting the right sound and bang, 3 weeks and its done.
This album seems a little heavier / darker than your first. Was that intentional?
It was natural progression I think. James is a massive “Tool” fan and he introduced us to that and we wanted to push ourselves abit more to that side of things. The darker side could be down to a little frustration that we are not quite where we hoped we would be after the first album and we are coming out fighting again but at the same time there is a diverse mix on the cd so its like swings and roundabouts.
Your first abum did get a lot of praise though from critics. Were you worried you may have set the bar too high for your next release?
Its always a worry. We think this album is a better record and if the reviews weren’t favourable that would be quite depressing for a week or so (laughs). You can only do what you can and after that the critics say what thye are gonna say. Theres no control over that so no point worrying about it.
Do you read and or care about reviews of your shows or music?
Certain publications yeah because you think they are more likley to “get you”. Some you know straight away they are not gonna like it because that’s not what they aim their tastes at. The ones we wanted to get good reviews from we have. We didn’t just go out saying we want to make something everyone likes but as long as some people like it! If I read a review that’s just critical and I cant take away any constructive criticism then it doesn’t bother me. If they say something that strikes a chord which sometimes it does I think “nice one, I’ll take that away and consider it next time”
Naturally you will care about what we have to say about you right?
At the end of the day we are one of so many bands that are in these major magazines andto be asked b smaller press to do stuff is more personal. Just because we have been in Kerrang doesn’t mean we are Kerrang darlings and its nice that people at the grass routes are taking an interest in the band and that’s where the word starts to spread. Its more personal and its something that deserves our time and attention.
Whats the most frequent question the press ask?
How does it feel to have Charlie asWills brother. That question is slowly but surley dying out but that’s the most asked question over the last 4 years.
What question do they never ask but you wish they would?
Good question! Probably more about the songs. People rarely ask us anything about the tunes. As guitar geeks it would be nice to get asked about that but you cant expect everyone to love guitar hero.
