All I knew about Apocalyptica is, as it says on their website, “A band famous for playing Metallica with four cellos”. That’s all I needed to know, to decide to see them live.

They had a band called ‘Swallow the Sun’ to support them. I didn’t expect much, and I wasn’t disappointed. They held no entertainment for me, no real tune to the music and I found the vocals quite laughable. Having said that, there are people who enjoy their kind of sound, and they may well be good at what they do.

Then came Apocalyptica. They kicked off with a few songs I didn’t recognise, so I assume they were some of their own. All very well performed and very entertaining. A couple of songs into it, they started the Metallica. They played One, Search and Destroy, Enter Sandman and a couple of others. All done brilliantly.
They’re a Finnish band and I couldn’t understand a word the guy was saying when he spoke, but that didn’t matter. Their drummer was extremely energetic, which added to the atmosphere. Infact the entire band had a lot of energy (barring the guy who sat at the side with his little round sunglasses on the entire time), encouraging the crowd to start clapping while waving their cello (which is quite a large instrument!) above their heads with one hand.

They slowed it down towards the middle, playing a very slow piece, the kind you would expect a cello quartet to play, before going straight back into one of the best songs of the night. I don’t know it’s name, as I said, I couldn’t understand the guy, but it sounded like their own piece. I wish I could, I would like to hear it again.

If you’re a fan of Metallica, you’ll probably enjoy Apocalyptica, even if only for the entertaining covers. If you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll probably find something you like. I would definately see them again.

Oh, and they finished with ‘The Hall Of The Mountain King’ (the alton towers theme tune) that too, was great.

Rating: ★★★★☆
