Humour, The – The Humour EP

The Humour, a band I have to admit I was previously unaware of, are one of those bands that are destined to be big. Not really through any stand-out talent or anything like that, but more because there is already an established crowd that will absolutely lap this stuff up. Fans of bands like Kids In Glass Houses etc, the more poppy side of the whole emo/rock thing will likely mess themselves over the infectious hooks and sing-a-longy choruses thrown up by a band like this.
This isn’t to say the music is not without merit, it’s pefectly listenable (if a little safe) and it’s clear to see the effort put into creating their sound, it’s just that it’s a little too clean for me personally. At times sounding like they could launch into heavier climbs, it all seems to simmer down and the usual riffs take over and never really leave. Predictable isn’t really the word, but we’ve definitely heard this before.
However, this can only really be said for the first two tracks on this rather short EP (3 songs, clocking in at under 10 minutes). The third track, ‘Your Robot Dance In Time’ is easily the strongest on offer here…if only because it offers something different, sounding like a pop-punk Muse meeting Engerica with added claps thrown in for good measure. The verses here are entertaining, the chorus destined to be a crowd pleaser, and excellent use of a robotic voice on a breakdown midway through the track. It really is a good song. Depending on how they use this direction in future, they could turn into a much more interesting piece.
That’s all I have to say really…not a spectacular EP, but it’ll get people interested and looking forward to a full release.

Give it a shot…odds are you’ll like it. I can’t say I didn’t.
